Who is KD1MU?
With over 50 years of experience in the two-way radio industry, our expertise runs deep. I’ve been a Ham since 1971 and a GMRS operator since 2019. What started as a small, local operation has grown into a comprehensive store serving radio operators across various industries and hobbies. Our journey began with a simple goal: to provide high-quality radio equipment and outstanding customer service. Decades later, that same goal drives us to become a leading supplier of communication products.

Amateur Radio
Amateur Radio, often called ham radio, is a popular radio service hobby and service that involves the use of designated radio frequencies for non-commercial communication and experimentation. Licensed amateurs (called ham operators) use radios to communicate with others around the world, participate in public service activities, and explore a variety of technical aspects of radio communication. Ham radio licenses require passing a test in radio theory and part 97 rules and regulations.
Prepping and Radio
Prepping is preparing for man made or natural disasters that may limit access to the public infrastructure. While much of prepping focuses on survival and defense, an important part is radio services and emergency communication using Amateur Radio and GMRS. Read more about prepping by clicking the button below.
Getting Started with DMR
Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is a digital communications radio service used in Ham Radio and Commercial Radio communications. It is a little more complicated to set up than analog radios, but once you learn the terminology and organization, it is straight forward to use. This guide will help you get started with DMR
DMR Terminology
Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) a digital communications radio service used in Ham Radio and Commercial Radio communications has its own terminology and vernacular. This document explains the elements of DMR and how they fit together.
Land Mobile Radio (LMR)
Land Mobile Radio is a wireless radio service used primarily for voice communication between two or more users. LMR systems are widely employed by government agencies, public safety organizations, military units, utilities, transportation services, and private industry.
DMR versus Analog
DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) and Analog Radio services are widely used in two-way communication systems, each with its own set of strengths and limitations. As the industry transitions towards digital technology, understanding the differences between DMR and analog systems becomes crucial, especially in areas like features, programming, repeaters, and linking repeaters. Below is a detailed comparison of these two types of radios.

Fixing Battery Powerpole
Your battery arrived with the red and black connecters separated from each other. What is the right way to reattach them. This video shows how to do that correctly.
GMRS
The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is highly useful for short- to medium-range two-way communications, particularly in outdoor or off-grid environments. It offers several advantages, especially for personal, family, and group use. Here are the key uses of GMRS. Unlike Ham radio, the GMRS license is test free.
PTT over Cellular (PoC)
Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) radio service is a modern communication system that allows users to communicate instantly over mobile networks by pressing a single button, similar to traditional two-way radio systems. However, unlike traditional Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems that rely on dedicated radio frequencies and infrastructure, PoC leverages the widespread coverage of cellular networks (3G, 4G LTE, and 5G) to provide near-instant voice communication.
With the growing availability of cellular networks and advancements in digital technology, PoC has emerged as a powerful alternative to traditional LMR systems, especially for organizations requiring wide-area communications without the limitations of radio frequency constraints.
PoC versus LMR
While both PoC and LMR radio services provide instantaneous voice communication, PoC offers several significant advantages over traditional LMR systems, particularly in terms of coverage, scalability, cost, and functionality.

Mesh Networking
I’ve been experimenting with Mesh networks for a couple of weeks now, setting up my own node and participating in the work-wide Meshtastic network. I started with a $23 EPS32 version 3 integrated IoT board by HelTec and added a GPS device that I bought on AliExpress a few years ago for $4.00. The node was easy to set up and include management software that can connect via bluetooth, serial port, or WIFI. I added a 20AH lifepo4 battery and plan to include a solar panel for continuous operation.
